Kindness is one of the most important qualities. She, in fact, makes us a man, makes us see the good, help, forgive. Kindness is like a ray of light warming the world. But, as you know, in the light there is a shadow. Kindness casts a shadow called cruelty. What is it due to, what makes us resort to it? Does it depend on the person or on the circumstances? Many writers tried to find answers to these questions. For example, I. Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons” is saturated with the author’s thoughts on these topics.

1. (Kindness and cruelty - inborn or acquired?). How diverse people are, and what extremes they can combine! Kindness and cruelty are direct opposites, but in the modern world they do not repel each other. Quite the contrary, people who are cruel and kind are attracted and establish a certain balance. In I. Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”, the author draws a parallel between two brothers - Pavel and Nikolai Kirsanov. The first, according to the profession, is a person with an inner core who does not openly show his feelings, to some extent even rude and cruel moments. His brother Nicholas is the opposite of him. He is distinguished by his rationality, loyalty and kindness. Throughout the novel more than once there is a clash of these two poles, clearly demonstrating the difference between the brothers. When Paul met his beloved Nicholas, he did not even dignify her with his gaze. The same coldness remembered the visit of his nephew. Pavel is not able to compromise, in the slightest discrepancy with his interests and beliefs, he enters the struggle, in the literal sense. So a duel with Evgeny Bazarov was appointed. While Nikolai repeatedly shows his love and kindness. He cares about his family - his beloved and his little son. He also comes to the rescue of his brother's conflicts, constantly trying to justify and protect him. But can blood relatives be so different? There is only one conclusion: kindness and cruelty are not innate qualities, but acquired ones.
2. (Which is stronger - kindness or cruelty?). There is so much cruelty in the world! But what generates it? Can a cruel man show mercy or can he never change? In this discussion, it is appropriate to recall Yevgeny Bazarov, the hero of I. Turgenev’s novel “Fathers and Sons”. Bazarov is a rather controversial and incomprehensible character with his "quirks" and his truth. It gives the impression of a rather self-confident, intelligent person, going against the world and the norms accepted in it. However, with people, especially the closest, he does not know how to get along. For the reader, he causes negative emotions due to his attitude to parents. Once they put everything they could into it, but now there is a huge gap between them, not only territorial, but also spiritual. They became completely different - simple-minded parents and too “complicated” son. He does not visit them for three years, and after the long-awaited meeting for parents, Bazarov does not crumble in feelings, but behaves coldly, ignores the tears of his mother and does not even dignify their conversation. However, parental love is stronger than such cruelty. After the death of his son, father and mother tirelessly mourned his grave, and besides, they were the only ones who did this.
3. (The personification of kindness in man). Kindness is one of the brightest qualities, it saved millions of destinies and prevented thousands of conflicts. But what is it manifested in? In concrete actions, or if a person is kind, is he kind in everything? The last assumption is confirmed in the novel by I. The writer introduces the works of Fenechka, a secondary character, an addition to the main character, Nikolai Kirsanov. Although the character is not disclosed throughout the novel, the reader's main impression of her has time to develop. She is inconspicuous, uneducated, but very sensitive and caring girl. She has a son from Nicholas, in which she does not have a soul. In the house, she always maintains order and creates coziness. She knows how to win over, talked to her loved the most controversial hero of the novel - Evgeny Bazarov. The girl always listened and tried to give good advice. Can you call her good? Definitely yes. This quality is imbued with every act of her, this is what she attracts to herself.
