(216 words) The action takes place in the village of Kolotovka, namely in the “Pritynny” tavern. The narrator comes to this place on a hot, sultry day in order to quench his thirst, but remains at a competition between two singers, well-known in the district. Singers throw lots, and the row from Zhizdra is the first to act. He performs a cheerful and lively song, which is very pleasing to all his listeners, and in particular, Stunned - the well-known slobber and fellow. After the line finishes singing, almost everyone is sure that he will be the winner.
The next performer is Yashka-Turk, a painful and thin young man of about twenty-three. It was evident that he was in great excitement: his hands were shaking, his eyes blinked, his breathing was interrupted and interrupted. However, despite the fact that Yashka began to sing in a trembling voice, like a string, everyone soon froze in amazement, and later even began to cry. The guy was no longer timid, but sang with all his heart, so much so that he was able to touch absolutely everyone, including the unflappable Dikogo-Barin, whose face was a heavy tear. The rowman, Jacob's rival, was touched by his singing no less, after which he immediately admitted defeat. It was decided that the winner would sing in the tavern until the evening. The narrator, so as not to spoil his first impression, leaves. He gets to the hay and falls asleep. The hero wakes up only in the evening, when Jacob’s victory is still celebrated in “Pritynny”, after which he turns around and descends from the hill on which Kolotovka is located.
