The amazing film of the late 20th century starring Robin Williams is based on the heart-breaking story of teenage boys who entered the society of dead poets - a secret collection of romantic young men, constrained by ordinary life in a gray, uninteresting little world.
A literature teacher, Mr. Keating, instilled in his students a love of poetry by peculiar methods: he agitated young men to rip pages from textbooks that contradict the views on Keating’s poetry, forced each of his students to open up, and was sincerely interested in the affairs of his students. John Keating is an example of the same teacher whom students adore and respect, but parents and school administrators are afraid.
So, Neil Perry's parents accuse the teacher of the suicide of their son. A rebel and romantic by nature, Neal dared to dream and realized that he wanted to pursue acting, but here he was faced with harsh realities: the strict and unprincipled disposition of his father, who wanted to give his son an education and a career as a doctor. The role of Neil Perry is played by the brilliant actor Robert Sean Leonard. His image blows youthful charm, it is difficult to believe that this actor is now a 50-year-old man with piercing gray hairs.
There is no main character in the film, each image is a cog in the system of building relationships between teenagers with the opposite sex, with teachers and parents. Why can't Mr. Keating or Neil Perry be called the main character? I think the answer to this question lies in the title. The Society of Dead Poets is a collective concept, but not an individual one. And a teacher with a warm heart and wrinkles under his eyes is just a guiding vector in this creative impulse. Robin Williams as a mentor was inimitable. This is one of his best roles, reminiscent of a great actor, who, unfortunately, is no longer alive.
The tragic end is also a controversial moment in the Society of Dead Poets. It would be logical if, after Neil’s performance, his father changed his mind and allowed him to engage in theatrical art. But Perry didn’t even show the fight, and after the final ban of the parent he committed suicide.
This example is not a model of behavior for young people. The younger generation would like to see a lesson in the face of this hero, but (since I already started spoiling), the guys will start to fight only in the very last scene. During the lesson with another teacher, Keating will come into the classroom with the intention of picking up some of his things. Timidly, embarrassed, but the students got up, stood at the desks as a sign of respect to their indispensable teacher of literature. And, despite all the tragedy of the events, John Keating has earned recognition, because it is precisely such teachers who bring up a thinking, talented generation.
