(345 words) The story of Ivan Alekseevich Bunin “The Master from San Francisco” was written in 1915. The main events take place on the large luxury steamboat-hotel "Atlantis", on which one family travels. A brief retelling of the plot is presented below.
A gentleman from San Francisco, whose name is not named, goes with his wife and daughter on a two-year trip to the Old World to relax and have fun. On the ship they are surrounded by the same rich people. Life on the ship goes according to a certain schedule, consisting of walks on the deck, talking with each other, reading newspapers, lying on chairs for several hours and eating. In the evening, vacationers enjoy playing the orchestra, dancing in chic outfits, drinking expensive alcoholic beverages and smoking liquors, giving orders to blacks serving them in red coats. At this time, sailors were working on the lowest deck, who nonstop fired the stoves so that the rich arrived would be comfortable resting.
After arriving in Naples, the life of the gentleman's family from San Francisco continues in the same vein - they settle in an expensive hotel, and then again they rest and eat according to the schedule. But because of the not very comfortable climatic conditions, they decide to go to the island of Capri, where at this time it is warm and sunny.
At Capri, the family is friendly hosted at the hotel and everyone is getting ready for dinner. A gentleman from San Francisco, having gathered earlier than his family members, goes to a quiet place to read the newspaper, but suddenly his health worsens - the lines on the newspaper pages begin to dance, and he falls lifelessly from the chair to the floor. Another guest, seeing this, runs to the dining room and in a panic tells everyone about what happened, the hotel owner realizes that the evening is ruined.
His body is transferred to the smallest and worst room, the hotel owner gives a negative answer to his wife’s request to transfer her husband to their room, as he understands that other guests will avoid living in these apartments, he does not want to completely ruin his reputation and lose guests. Instead of the coffin, he suggested putting the master in a large wooden box from under the bottles.
Early in the morning, a box with a lying man is delivered to Atlantis, on which he began his serene journey. He was put in a dark hold at the very bottom of the ship. Vacationers, however, had no idea what was going on; they continued to rest and have fun in the same way to the music of the orchestra.
