Each of us is moving towards our goal. For some, it’s good and correct, but slow and difficult, for others it is crooked and immoral, but it’s easy and fast. A choice of this kind always characterizes a person. If she achieves what she wants honestly and virtuously, then she can be relied on. And on the contrary, it’s better never to mess with such an unprincipled and forged person.
In Gorky's story “The Old Woman Izergil”, the hero strove to save his people from the impenetrable darkness of the forests, which promised death. People were expelled from their fertile lands by enemies and were forced to wander in the forests to find a new haven. However, they could not find a way out of the thickets and lost hope. But Danko decided to lead them and assume all responsibility. He was insulted, not understood, reproached, and yet the young man led his tribe to freedom. At one point, he took his heart out of his chest, just to convince the tired travelers to move on. The hero fell victim to his dream, but nevertheless embodied it in reality. He walked toward the goal honestly and directly, not afraid of trials. You can trust him, you can equal him.
In Tolstoy's novel War and Peace there are heroes whose unscrupulousness strikes to the core. For example, Berg, the husband of Vera Rostova, is trying to make capital on people's grief. When the whole country reared up against the French invader, this prudent businessman began to buy valuable items at a cheap price from desperate compatriots. During the evacuation of Moscow, he not only did not help the impoverished relatives, the parents of Vera, but also brazenly used general confusion in order to gain profit. As he doesn’t care who will be in power: Napoleon or Emperor Alexander. They are indifferent to human suffering and to the fate of the fatherland. To their goal - profit - they are ready to go over their heads. That means they are better off.
Thus, the moral path to the goal is the destiny of an honest man, and the curved path of the miser, the sly and the traitor is a difficult cross for his loved ones, because each of our vice is reflected precisely on them. Low and vile means always betray a vile person who is ready for anything for the sake of his result. These need to be avoided.
